Breaking News - CVS Withdraws from Grand Union Site
The rumors that CVS was interested in and / or had already signed a lease for the grocery store that is now Grand Union were indeed true. At the Board of Selectmen's public hearing today, CVS' attorney officially informed the Selectmen and the 500 people in attendance that CVS would not be coming to that location on Nantucket.
Congratulations are due to Greg Hinson and his "No CVS on Nantucket" campaign for protecting the historic nature of downtown Nantucket and for supporting local businesses on Nantucket. Here, here!
The Inky story is here: CVS backs away from Grand Union site

CSN Supports Local Small Businesses on Nantucket and Opposes CVS in Downtown Historic District

November 19, 2012
Dear Nantucket Neighbors:
A petition to block a CVS store from occupying the current Grand Union / old A&P grocery store has been initiated by a group called "No CVS on ACK". This group is trying to support a 2006 Town Meeting decision to block chain stores from locating in the downtown historic district. Common Sense Nantucket supports this movement and encourages everyone to sign the petition which will be presented to the Board of Selectmen on Tuesday November 20 at their special meeting at 1 pm.
CSN fully supports our local businesses. We want them to thrive! We need local people dedicated to working with Nantucket residents and visitors alike, not big corporate giants swooping in to wipe them out. While many of us may patronize CVS on the mainland, let's band together and let them know that we Nantucketers do not want their store located in our historic downtown district.
CSN has provided a positive voice for preserving the historic and rural nature and heritage of our island. Preservation of our culture and scenic beauty includes our historic downtown. Without our unique "look and feel", we will become just any other place. Please support "No CVS on Nantucket".
